The colorful festival of Mardi Gras is an event that goes back thousands of years but has been celebrated in the United States beginning on March 3, 1699. French explorers Pierre Le Moyne d’lberville and Sieur de Beienville docked near present-day New Orleans, Louisiana. There, they had a small celebration and designated the place Point du Mardi. Learning more about this exotic holiday is a wonderful way to study the history, art, and culture of this part of the country.
