Crown Prince Tyler pronounced his judgment: Christopher Fredrico is banished from the kingdom of North Raec. If he is found within our territory, his life will be forfeit. All Chris wanted was to be a peaceful scholar who could spend a lot of time with his friends. Now, falsely accused of stealing a magical artifact, he is forced to leave the only home he knows. But as he and his friends travel towards the coast, they find a riddle that may save a kingdom–or cost them their lives. Banished is the first book in The Riddled Stone, a new series by 13-year-old homeschooled author Teresa Gaskins.
First I feel I must admit that “fantasy” is not my first pick for reading material and my daughter is the same way. I have never even read the Harry Potter series and my daughter has just read one of them. (although ironically we have seen the movies) When I was a teenager though I did read quite a few books of this genre but somewhere over the years my interests changed.
Despite that fact, there are many things I DO like about this first book in a series. First, I am very impressed that it was written by a 13 yr old homeschooler. Yes, a 13 year old! Teresa Gaskins has been writing stories for a few years in her blog. She has participated in the NaNoWriMo Youth program as a part of her language studies. Her use of descriptive words is wonderful as is her grammar! I found myself looking up word definitions while reading, (I love how easy a kindle makes that) refreshing my memory on such things as harpies. I will be definitely be adding a game section to this review!
I do recommend this book for children age 9 and up. The book didn’t hold my interest as much as many I have read but I think that may be due to my own preferences. I would love someone that is into fantasy fiction to do a review on the whole plot and characters as I’m not sure I could give it the credit it deserves.
